Interesting, but it falls short.
Im sure that you have read that this is a more modern retelling of invasion of the body snatchers. Don't think of it that way though. If you compare the 2 then my rating for this would go down. This feels more like a pretentious indie movie rather than a horror. The whole thing being about a flower was interesting, but the characters are boring and uninteresting. Which is disappointing considering that is what is supposed to hold this movie together. There isn't really a satisfying climactic scene that the movie builds up to and there is a ton of build up. The music in the movie was really odd to say the least and sometimes annoying. What can I say, I feel as if I wasted a lot of time on this movie.

Flawed in every department, typical critic love fest
So it's a modern day take on an old sci-fi classic, with a slight twist, fine we understand that quick enough. However, it fails in direction completely, cold acting with warm and pastal colours is just a cliche.
The lead actor centre stage and holding the shot whilst (kabuki) music plays (clearly thinks it has something to do with ikebana) gives an ominous feel, REALLY. You care nothing for the characters, why should you, that's the premise of the film. As for the soundtrack, well it is very annoying, a drum here, an asthmatic whistle there, a tin can, what sounds like a box of chihuahua's, just annoys the viewer. The style, it tries but falls flat, the plant is shown in vivid pink, alluding to the passion it feels, the lead actor originally wears bold colours but then the pastoral colours come in later, why they have to wear 70's clothing to allow this when the rest of the film is clearly in the here and now god knows.
A typical critics film from a director who believes their own hype finding what they need to find in films as their own lives are one dimensional and so far from a real film goer.
Don't even start on the dialogue. A ten minute short would give you a better experience.

"Flavorless Europudding"?
Warning: Spoilers
In attempts to be a female Frankenstein story, "Little Joe", directed by Jessica Hausner, tells the story of a female scientist, Alice, who creates a plant that can make people happy. Described by The Hollywood Reporter as "flavorless Europudding", the film was under- whelmingly artistic. The plot lacked structure and scenes did not flow as well as they had the potential to. The storyline was fairly weak to begin with. The audience is initially introduced to Alice, who is abso- lutely work obsessed. She genetically modifies a plant that can change peoples' emotions and overall make them happy just by breathing in a scent. This project of Alice's surely goes wrong, as people are starting to become brainwashed. However, the brainwashing wasn't all that interesting. The plant, called Little Joe after Alice's son, Joe, was brainwashing people through its pollen in order for people to want to protect it, because the plant could not reproduce. The whole idea of this is just so hard to process, especially within the moment in a theater. It took me awhile to figure things out. The story is bland and straight out confusing for the first hour. Overall, the point of the plant taking away peoples' emotions wasn't emphasized enough. The acting was nothing special - the actors didn't convince me that
the plant was harming them. The performances were so neutral and underwhelming. I couldn't feel emotions from any of the characters, even if there were intense parts within the film. In one scene, we see a character absolutely torn apart due to a build up of depression and other mental illnesses. Because of her job, the woman cannot stand her life anymore and throws herself off a high ledge in her work building. It was emotionless and bland during a time where the performances needed to be intense and dramatic. Hausner could not deliver to her own script's needs. "Little Joe" was also just a failed thriller film. There was barely any suspense, even though I believe there was meant to be a lot. The pacing within the first hour was slow, trying to focus on family issues. It just took awhile for me to piece things together, which should never be the case (unless done extremely well, like in "Memento"). Though I thoroughly disliked the creative direction that was taken in the film, I would still rate it around a 6/10 solely because there were multiple strong technical aspects that I think a lot of the film critics' reviews overlooked. There was an article written on "Little Joe" that only focused on the negative aspects of it. It gave absolutely no credit to sound design. The sound was probably the best part of the film. The score matched up extremely well with the visuals and the sound effects worked perfectly with it too. The visual images that I was seeing went hand- in-hand with the auditory sounds that I was hearing. It made me feel content within the showing. Speaking of visuals, I appreciated how "Little Joe" used a really difficult color palette, yet somehow managed to keep it strong and consistent. The choice of reds and greens was a bold move, and I didn't think that it could be pulled off. It was - props to Hausner for that. The production designer was impressive and was not afraid to go for the consistent color palette. The image shown above was one of the main looks of the film, and it was color corrected absolutely perfectly. To end, I appreciated how the color palette was introduced to viewers, right from the opening shot.

Constant Noise
Don't watch this unless you really want to listen to the constant squeal of high pitched frequencies for two hours

Silly mom, poisons her son.
A doctor, after suspecting a plant she designed is poisoning her son, leaves the plant in her son's bedroom for the duration of the movie!!! This movie will leave you frustrated. It's sad because in all honesty, this could've been a really awesome movie but the continued stupidity of the main character just makes you feel empty.

Couldn't say I enjoyed it
The story has an interesting premise, and can be quite suspenseful. However, the pace is super slow, which kills the suspense and momentum. The music and the repeating CCTV shot at the plants get tiresome as well. Overall, I couldn't say I enjoyed it.

Misuse of Kabuki music in this Japaneseless arty farty culturaly misappropriated bore fest!
As others have already said this would have worked as a 15 minute short film but at 1 hour 45 minutes of ridiculous misplaced sound effects and what is all that Kabuki music all about? The nearest this film gets to Japan is the damned sushi takeaway the lead character and her son eat so where are the enraged triggered 's to shout "Cultural Appropriation" at this misuse of Kabuki music in this Japaneseless arty farty bore fest? There is nothing engaging in any of the characters, indeed their banality before and after infection remains exactly the same resulting in one of the most boring and senseless wastes of time. Technically I have to check the spoiler box because so little happens in this drudge of a film that even mentioning the Kabuki music is a spoiler. Oh and if you do choose to watch this and write a review please please explain to me why a bunch of flowers are barking and making all the noise of a kennels at feeding time because I am just bemused by the choice of sound effects used in this crap. Message to the film makers: The place to put sudden drum beats is during a reveal in the film or a sudden change of pace in the action, you don't put in random sound effects during moments of inaction because that just makes you look like an idiotic wannabe failure.

What a load of crap.
I watched this film thinking that it was going to have some great climactic ending, only to realize that this film was a load of crap about nothing. The playbook is stolen from the invasions of the body snatchers, but dumbed down to insult the viewers intelligence with a stupid plant lab, a stupid woman, and a handful of stupid, colleagues. Time truly wasted on this nonsense.

Never ending whistling and high pitched noises
Boring film that is predominantly filled with whistling and other high pitched noises for the entirety.
It genuinely gave me a migraine after a short time purely due to the never ending headache inducing sounds.

HATE the dissonant high pitch whistles.
Yes, using music to induce a mood can work. But PLEASE cut back on the same annoying clip of flutes or whatever with a high pitch whistle of two tones that warble together. I may not even finish this junk if they can't stop playing that music over, and over. Other than that I see nothing logical about their story or the characters. Just "GMO" scare material here. Come up with a result you want. Then invent a "reason". I'm much more interested in the an interesting situation and explore what that could mean (good and bad). And add to that artificial "drama" from obviously unstable, and intransigent people. Should have been a 15 minute short. Very little to say here.
really cool plot
Enjoyed this movie.
Good acting and story.
Found the drums througout a little annoying but can have it all give it a shot if you like unique movies 6. 9

Nothing to see here
Steal script from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Plagiarize into "new" script with geneticists instead of pods Present at Cannes and win awards. Guess that's one way to make a living. Lead actress and her son were already pod people before the movie began. No way to tell the difference. 1:45 of my life I will never get back.

Waste of the actors time
Come on their suppose to be scientist yea so why not just kill the plant in front of the effected and see if they would react that would save a lot of time for the viewers stead of the unnecessary suspense that i have slept through

Interesting implications
Looking through all the very negative and shallow reviews just complaining about the score I feel I need to add something to the discussion. People seem to be missing what the film has to say and I think it has very interesting ideas about our ways of thinking. Throughout the film it's very unclear if the plants are actually infecting people or if it's more of a psychological conspiracy in the characters head. You really get a sense that something's wrong (the music really emphasizes this greatly) but at the same time you ask the question: what exactly is wrong? In the end the plant seems to "win" and change people, which earlier in the film felt wrong but in the end simply seems like a paradigm shift in thinking. People are acting differently but no one's harmed or anything (except the one scientist who didn't accept the new paradigm).
I think the film implies some kind of moral/psychological relativism. Why do we feel our morals are so absolute when they're really quite arbitrary? Inhaling the pollen acts like a metaphor for any way of thinking, religious or what we call "secular" beliefs. Contrary to other reviewers I think this film was a really interesting watch, but don't forget to contemplate it's message.

Slow but compelling
This was an overall somewhat creepy film. Even when the characters were themselves they were still creepy. I rated a 7, fair. The directing and chop suey like sound score really hit hard and gave the film it's teeth. The timing of the score with the camera work was very tight and deliberate, and kept the creepiness factor going throughout. Casting and acting were correctly matched, special effects worked well although a little more action from the antagonists might have highlighted the 'body snatcher' mechanism a little better but then again the writer and director obviously wanted it vague to keep the suspence and audience guessing till the end. Which still has me wondering even a day later. This slow moving film won't disappoint but it also won't wow you. It will however keep you engaged, stimulated, and guessing throughout. Is little joe happy with my review lol?

An attempt of art, but without a movie
I was expecting big things of this one and I really wanted to like it.
The minimalist style with it's pale, pastel colors may not be to everybody's taste. I quite liked it though. But if you make such an artsy-fartsy movie, it better has some substance to go with it.
This is where the movie falls royally short. In fact I would call it a new benchmark in absolute stupidity.
There is so much wrong with the (largely nonexistant) plot, I don't know where to begin. Warning, here be spoilers! The plants are grown in a "secure" lab with access restrictions and safety measurements. At one point we see Ben Whishaw's character disinfecting the soles of his shoes after coming out of the greenhouse. Still they think a rag held by elastic bands around the ears is totally fine around experimental plants with possibly dangerous pollen. Despite all this security, the main character brings one of those experimental plants home to her son and put it in his room, wide open without any security measures at all.
Even when she strongly suspects the plant may be harmful and even after her son shows strange behavior, she still leaves the plant in his room. And for some reason she still is not "infected" herself. The other colleague who pretends to be infected (without even knowing what that means) exposes herself at a totally random point without any reason or consequences. Two kids have no problem breaking into the "secure" lab during nighttime and stay undetected. They also steal a plant which is noticed by the staff later but does not really seem to worry anybody. The only reason I was watching this to the end was my hope of a finale that would make sense and maybe explain some of the holes that were left open. No such luck though. There is no real ending, it just peters out and then it's over. If you like earshattering Kabuki-style music, soul-less acting, gaping plotholes and movies that make no sense at all, absolutely go for it. Avoid otherwise.

Worst score of any film ever
The movie is ok. Minimalist and slow sci fi, which would work well enough if not for the absolutely awful score. A somewhat interesting take on Invasion of The Body Snatchers with botany run amuck. The suspense and action you might expect has instead been replaced with an incredibly ill timed and obnoxious score. Ok to watch. Difficult to listen to.

Audibly and visually fantastic.
I found it really interesting to watch.
It is beautiful, a little weird and refreshing.

Surely the worst movie of the year! Slow like hell! Not intense and too many overuse scene! Bored to freaking death!
This film start with a plant breeding lab, two worker(Alice and Chris) talking about their company philosophy, and Alice sending her son "Joe" back to her house scene! As turnout, this film is about solving the mystery of a plant breeding by Alice "Little Joe"! Alice thought the plant can harm people by infected them but it's not! Entire film slow like freaking hell! The film also full of boring overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the working at the plant breeding lab scene, overuse of the super freaking annoying background music scene, overuse of the washing hand scene and overuse of the watching video clip scene! The conversation in the film also bored to death! The death of Bella's dog and she kill herself scene also never show to us! Barely intense scene is, Chris knock Alice out scene! But this scene even show us sideways! At the end, Little Joe awarded a prize! Alice sent Joe back to his father house! Alice greeting Little Joe "Goodnight"! That's it! Definitely the worst movie of the year! Avoid at all freaking cost!

Plant gaslights woman
Visually appealing but irritating. I don't know if that's what the producers of this were hoping for, and if so they managed to get on my nerves a lot. Everything from the music, to the main characters inability to register what's happening in front of her face. It's basically a film about a plant gaslighting a woman for two hours. I don't know what the film makers were going for and that makes this a bland and slow film

Body Snatchers meet Jurassic Park
It's a reuse of the idea of the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but far from good. It simply replaces the aliens by a genetically modified sterile flower that controls people for it's own survival. Not exactly forward thinking or creative since the idea of nature "finding a way" has been used in the first Jurassic Park, where the use of amphibians DNA to fill the gaps of Dinosaur DNA allowed for mutations to make the animals fertile. So, without fresh ideas or at least a creative approach all that it's left is visuals. And here we get an abuse of colors coordinated with design furniture and architecture with geometrical positioning. In addition, the acting is so wooden and stiff that I'm surprised that the actors were even allowed to used the elbows and knees when moving. There were some "clever" details like the psychologist who tries to control the scientist wearing red flowers in the clothing pattern. And don't get me started with the music. Absolutely distracting and stealing the attention from the movie in a bad way. And this is coming from someone who likes experimental music, some of which many people don't even consider as music.
